Elizabethton, TN is the county seat of Carter County and has a population of about 14,000 residents. It was founded in 1799 and incorporated later in 1905. Elizabethton is located within the “Tri-Cities” area of Northeastern Tennessee, which is composed of Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol. Historically, Elizabethton is known for being a major player in the Civil War and the history of the rail road. In the early 20th century, this city was home to many major railroad companies, including the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, the East Tennessee Railway, and the Southern Railway. It’s location near the Doe and Watauga Rivers has also made this city historically popular for both water resources and water sport enthusiasts.

Visitors to Elizabethton often visit sites like the Downtown Historic District, the Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area, and the John and Landon Carter Mansion. The mansion is the oldest frame house in the state of Tennessee, as it was built between 1775 and 1780. Elizabethton also hosts Covered Bridge Days in the spring and a Revolutionary War re-enactment in May.
