Unicoi County is located in the state of Tennessee, and its population as of 2000 was near 18,000. Erwin is the county seat, and the county is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. They county has a total area of 186 square miles, and it falls within a humid subtropical climate zone characterized by hot summers, cool winters, and small amounts of snow.
The city of Erwin is the largest and arguably the most important city within the county. Industry has been very important to the economy of Erwin, and the Southern Potteries plant which operated in Erwin until the late 50s produced hand painted dishware called Blue Ridge dishware, still actively collected today. Enriched uranium is produces in Erwin’s Nuclear Fuel Services plant and is used in the production of nuclear power reactor fuel.
Outdoor enthusiasts may enjoy participating in Mountain Adventure Guide, located in Erwin. This organization provides whitewater rafting trips on the Watauga River. Visitors that enjoy history can also learn about Civil War battles in East Tennessee by touring the J.F. Toney Memorial Library and Unicoi County Heritage Museum. Unicoi County’s Apple Festival is also held each year in Erwin, and visitors can enjoy a variety of foods, vendors, and musical performances.
